Sana’a is located on a plateau at an altitude of 2300 meters, serving as the capital of Yemen, the capital of Sana’a Province, and the largest city in Yemen. The city is one of the ancient Arab cities, serving as the political, economic, and religious center of Yemen since the 4th century AD, and currently it is the political, economic, and cultural center of Yemen.
Sana’a enjoys a pleasant climate with blooming flowers and lush greenery throughout the year. Countless tourists from around the world visit every year. Among Arabs, there is a saying “Though the journey may be long, one must visit Sana’a,” and many now refer to Sana’a as the “Gateway to Yemen.” Sana’a is divided into two main parts, the Old City and the New City. The former, with a smaller area, preserves the ancient cultural heritage of the city and the traditional commercial way of life, while the latter has mostly modern buildings resulting from urban expansion from the suburbs. The Old City was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986. The inscribed area includes 103 mosques built before the 11th century, 14 hammams, and 6000 houses, notable ones being the Great Mosque of Sana’a and the Saleh Mosque.
