The Kabul Zoo is located on the bank of the Kabul River. It was opened in 1967, initially housing animals native to Afghanistan. It was considered a rare leisure destination in Afghanistan, attracting attention from both citizens and the media.

By 1972, the zoo was home to over 500 animals, with approximately 150,000 visitors annually. Unfortunately, during the civil war from 1992 to 1996, the zoo suffered severe damage, leading to the looting and killing of some elephants, giraffes, lions, and rare birds. Currently, the Kabul Zoo is home to over 280 animals, including 45 species of birds and mammals, as well as 36 species of fish. On weekends, it attracts over 10,000 visitors. The zoo is inhabited by wolves, bears, foxes, monkeys, eagles, peacocks, and even two lions, along with Afghanistan’s only pig. Despite the dilapidated fences and cages and limited variety of animals, the zoo’s popularity remains high among Afghans, as children can come here to play, have fun, and learn.

To attract more visitors, the zoo plans to build entertainment facilities, such as playgrounds for children, and aims to introduce animals from various countries, including crocodiles, leopards, kangaroos, and pandas.
