The Devil’s Bridge is located in a picturesque canyon in Ardino, Kardzhali Province, Bulgaria, near the Rhodope Mountains, spanning the Arda River. It is a beautiful and elegant medieval stone bridge, once part of the ancient route connecting Thracian Valley and the Aegean Sea.
Constructed by the Ottomans between 1515 and 1518, the Devil’s Bridge is 56 meters long with 3 arches and semi-circular holes between the arches for water level measurement. It is the largest and most famous bridge of its kind in the Rhodope Mountains. The bridge is 3.5 meters wide, 11.50 meters above the water surface, with a maximum span of 13 meters. Stone railings, 12 centimeters high, were added for pedestrian safety. In 1984, it was recognized as a Bulgarian cultural monument. With the majestic mountains in the background and the babbling creek below, it forms a beautiful picture perfect setting.
For the convenience of tourists, there is a picnic area near the stone bridge, making it an ideal destination for family outings.
