Cat Island (also known as Cat Island) is located in the central part of the Bahamas archipelago, with the highest point reaching 63 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in this island nation. It is said that after Columbus discovered America, Cat Island was the first island he landed on. In 1783, the earliest Europeans arrived here, with some saying the island was mainly named after a man named Arthur Catt; others believe it was named Cat Island because of the many wild cats on the island.
In history, this small island was once prosperous due to cotton cultivation, but its development level remained low, with residents living a primitive life of subsistence farming. The island is rich in cascarilla bark, with most of it being exported to Italy as raw materials for pharmaceuticals, perfumes, and the production of Campari. Cat Island has a simple folk customs, picturesque natural environment, and a temple named the “Hermitage,” which is said to have been built by the Catholic Franciscan friar John Hawes. Every year, many domestic and foreign tourists come here for sightseeing and vacation.
