Tongatapu Island – Tongatapu Island Travel Guide

The southernmost Tongatapu Island is the most prosperous and largest island in Tonga, accounting for about one-third of the country’s total land area. Tongatapu, the main island of the Kingdom of Tonga, is where the capital city Nuku’alofa is located. With a total area of 259 square kilometers, Tongatapu is the economic and transportation hub of Tonga. The island is covered with vast coconut and banana plantations, while the nearby Eua Island is blanketed with dense tropical rainforest. Tongatapu Island is flat in terrain, being a coral island with an elevation of only 10 meters. Over time, the thousands of meters of coral coastline have been eroded into a variety of bizarre caves, some of which are interconnected, forming the world-famous “Blowholes”. During high tide, seawater spurts out of the blowholes, soaring high into the air reaching tens of meters, then cascading back down to the ground, dazzling in the sunlight and making a spectacular sight.
